If you are like most people, you don’t really think about what’s on your resumé until it is time to look for a new job. You scramble to add your most recent experience and insert some duties and responsibilities. It reads like every other candidate’s resumé, “blah, blah, blah”.

If you truly want to stand out from other applicants and show your value to potential employers, it’s important to add your achievements and experiences while they are still fresh in your mind and relevant to your career goals. That means taking the time to stop and refresh your resume regularly so you don’t have to re-invent the wheel every time.

And what better time to make those updates than the end of the year? As you take inventory of what went right or wrong, your wins and losses, you can translate those experiences into words that tell your personal story of growth, perseverance, and resilience.

     Photo: Andrea Piacquadio - Pexels

Here are 8 of the best practices for updating your resumé:

    1. Choose the right accomplishments to add
Knowing exactly what your career goals are is important for deciding what skills and achievements are relevant.  Identify those that are most relevant to the position you plan on getting or retaining in the near future.

Then, reflect on 2023 and come up with examples of work, education, or personal projects that demonstrate those skills and experiences.

    2. Use the PAR or the STAR method
PAR stands for Problem, Action, and Result. Similarly, the STAR acronym represents Situation, Task, Action, and Result. This is an easy to understand and logical way to structure your accomplishments, highlighting the impact of your work.

For every accomplishment listed, describe the problem or challenge you faced, what you did to resolve it, and the result or outcome. This method of demonstrating your capabilities directly correlates your actions with intended results.

    3. Quantify your results
Ideally, the results of the work you did should be measurable. Whenever possible, you should use numbers, percentages, or other metrics to show the magnitude and significance of your achievements.

For example, instead of saying “increased sales”, say “increased sales by 25% in six months”. Framing your accomplishment in this way also demonstrates that you know how to set and meet SMART goals, Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.

    4. Use action verbs
Use strong action verbs that describe what you did when sharing your accomplishments. For example, use verbs like “led”, “created”, “launched”, “developed”, “improved”, “implemented”, or “achieved”.

An example that demonstrates this is, “Designed and developed a chatbot that improved customer satisfaction by 35% and reduced response time by 50%. Used Python, TensorFlow, and Azure Cognitive Services to implement the chatbot functionality and user interface.”

Avoid passive or vague verbs like “was responsible for”, “assisted with”, “participated in” or “helped”. These seem to indicate that you just happened to be part of something, rather than showing intention, leadership, or autonomy.

    5. Tailor your resumé to each job
All resumés are not created equal. What works for one position will get you overlooked for another. You need a relevant resumé for every role you intend to apply for.

Customize each one to match the specific requirements and expectations. Highlight the accomplishments that are most relevant and impressive for each position.

    6. Education matters
If you have gotten new degrees or certifications in 2023, it’s important to include them in your resumé. This includes any internships or milestones you’ve completed and the work you’ve done as part of that assignment.

You might say, “Recent graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and 3+ years of internship experience”. In describing your achievements, you could write, “Developed and launched a web app that reached over 10,000 users and won the Best Student Project Award at the 2023 Tech Expo”.

Another example is to add, “Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, University of Washington, 2023”. You could add, “Graduated with honors and a 3.8 GPA” or “Completed a capstone project on machine learning that was published in the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research”.

    7. Consider any new skills you’ve acquired
On-the-job learning and knowledge you pick up on your own time is important information to add. Any new technological skills should be included in your updated resumé.

You may have become proficient in Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or SQL over the past year. Or you may have become certified in Scrum and Agile methodologies. As long as your new skills are relevant to the role, add them to your documented experience proudly.

    8. Don’t be afraid to brag a little
Think of your resumé as a personal commercial that sells your skills, experience, and knowledge to perspective employers. Any accolade or awards you have received this year are great to include as they demonstrate your commitment to excellence.

Some straightforward examples of how to do this are, “Best Student Project Award, Tech Expo, 2023”, “Dean’s List, University of Washington, 2021-2023”, or “Microsoft Imagine Cup Finalist, 2022”.

You are your own best advocate when it comes to your career.
Remember that no one knows you better than you. The person most qualified to tout your achievements and experiences is that person who was there every step of the way… you!

Updating your resumé regularly is vital to keeping track of what you’ve done professionally. If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready. Here are the top 5 reasons why you should update your resume on National Professional Women of Color Network Career Board, even if you're not looking for a job.

    1. Remind yourself of your achievements

We can all use a confidence boost every now and then. Updating your resume will show you just how good you are at what you do.

    2. Understand your personality better
So you know what it is that you do, but why do you do it? Outlining your experiences will help you understand what it is about your personality that drives you to succeed in your line of work.

    3. Visualize the building blocks that got you where you are
Now that you know what you do and why you do it, what did it take for you to get where you are? You’ll be able to see what blocks you have built with previous experiences and academics that helped shape who you are today.

    4. Reflect on your strengths and identify your weaknesses
One of the most popular questions asked in an interview is, “What would you say your strengths and weaknesses are?”. While our strengths are usually obvious to us, we typically have a difficult time seeing our flaws. Analyzing your resume will help you prepare for the most testing question you’ll be asked.

    5. Prepare yourself for the worst
There is no telling what is going to happen at any given time within your career. Keep your resume up-to-date in order to prepare yourself for the unfortunate events we can’t control.

You are an incomparable masterpiece and wonder of the world but think about how many times you have been compared to or compared yourself to someone else.

If that perception made you feel less than or somehow diminished, then your willingness to define your own path, from a place of esteem and confidence, was taken away from you.

Reclaim and reinforce your personal power to define your path my proclaiming and following these five agreements with yourself:

Defining myself, as opposed to being defined by others, is one of the most difficult challenges I face.   ~ Carol Moseley-Braun

Agreement #1 - I accept the journey to define my path and claim my individual greatness by defining and designing the masterpiece that is me.

No one has the right or should be given the power to break down your sense of self.  Seeking validation or approval strips away your sense of worthiness and can begin an unhealthy habit of self-doubt.  You don’t need anyone’s permission to be great, to think outside the box or shatter the glass ceiling!  You come from a long line of brilliant, dignified, provocative, dedicated, and loving women.

Agreement #2 - I will follow my heart, my intuition, and my divine inner navigation system.

The dictionary describes self-definition as providing the fundamental nature of one's identity, character, abilities, and attitudes, and self-determination as free will that establishes one's own fate or course of action without compulsion. Taking this level of personal initiative is the next level in leadership and business development.  You must allow yourself to think without boundaries.  To dream big and act bold!

Agreement #3 - I will not ask for approval or permission to tap into my purpose-driven power.

Defining your own path begins with defining yourself. Who are you outside of anyone’s preconceived or biased perception of you, whether individual, familial or societal? It’s often difficult to make this leap of faith because historically women, from all cultures, were defined negatively to suit the misguided desires and insecurities of others.  Yet in the midst of those challenges and often because of them, we flourished. We decided to stay true to our divine destiny and step outside the flawed image portrayed.

Agreement #4 - I will uplift and cheer on my sister’s gifts instead of comparing mine to diminish our collective.

As a sisterhood, we can support your dream if you define it based on who you are and what you have to offer.  We must first remove the desire to compare or be compared to anyone else.  Take the truth of your history with the lessons of your experiences and take your place beside the others.

By changing your perspective and reshaping your mindset, you can transform your experience and unlock your unlimited potential and gift of originality.  You can boldly venture into any arena you see fit.

Agreement #5 - I will not allow anyone to separate me from my destined greatness.

Set you own standards and allow your imagination to extend beyond reach.  To do this you will need a renewed strategy, a shifted mindset, and focused self-determination.

Take a different path by deciding to become a trail blazer; confident in your abilities and aware of those who held your dreams on their shoulders.  Your path awaits…

Passion, smassion...just give me my paycheck! Some may tell you it’s one of those touchy-feely concepts reserved for artists and activists. But how important is passion in business?

Passion stirs the fire in the belly that drives you to do what most people won’t. It’s why individuals devote their lives to causes that will change the world. And also what compels a scientist to spend 16-hour days in the lab hoping to get one step closer to the solution for a customer.

When we lack passion, we lack an authentic drive to succeed. We may be temporarily motivated by money or a fear of consequences, but that will only last for so long.

I’ve learned this the hard way with my teenage son. Deon was an above-average student until high school. Suddenly, it was like his brain became disconnected from the rest of his body. Semester after semester, he teetered on the borderline of failure in at least one class.

We enlisted the help of tutors, offered financial incentives, and took away every privilege short of eating and breathing, with mediocre results.

No matter how hard we tried, we just couldn’t get Deon to see the long-term implications of his actions (or inaction), mainly because he doesn’t possess a strong passion for anything.

So I had to lay down my high scholastic aspirations for him in exchange for the hopeful realization that when he discovers his “thing”, he’ll be okay. Just this week, he mentioned that he thought it would be cool to live abroad. This just may be the thing that will turn life around for him.

Is passion in business important? You bet. Leadership expert John Maxwell said, “A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from his passion, not position.”

If the team you’re leading isn’t performing to your expectations, ask yourself, “How can I make them passionate about what we’re trying to achieve?” Short-term incentives and scare tactics will only go so far.

So what can you do if you find that you’re losing passion for your work? Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

    1. When was the last time I was really excited about my work?
    2. What existed then that doesn’t exist today?
    3. What can I do to get it back?

Maybe your business was really exciting in the start-up phase, but now it’s gotten dull and mundane. Or your last position involved lots of customer interaction, but now you’re stuck behind a desk. You may not be able to able to bring the passion back to your day-to-day routine, but maybe there are activities you can get involved in outside of work to fill the void, like volunteering.

I’ve helped people launch side businesses that reignite their passion and allow them to earn extra income. Or maybe it’s time to start considering a bold shift.

Whatever the right answer is for you, you owe it to yourself to thoughtfully pursue it. Simply hoping things will change is a lot like hoping to win the lottery when you didn’t even buy a ticket. When you’re passionate about your work, greatness happens.

And the impact of that greatness is bigger than just you and your happiness. Living with passion isn’t a selfish pursuit; it’s your personal responsibility.

Will you live up to it?
